In order to make a waffle, you have to prepare the waffle batter and cooks it in a waffle iron, which almost always results in a predictable shape and texture. Then, to do something different, you have to mould the freshly made waffle again, replicate it in another durable material, and create a structure that incorporates the new replicated shape. The piece might also serve a purpose—for example, it could emit light and be activated by pressing a button.
With what you have created, you can use it to light your home, market it in a charming lighting store, or leave it under the neon lights of an art gallery.
You can also cast it entirely again and replicate it into several more or less identical copies.
It doesn't matter what meaning the work conveys, nor the emotion it expresses, nor its affiliation with the vernacular, conceptual, or grotesque aesthetic, nor even its potential utility.
What matters is its hybrid nature and the freedom of its metamorphoses: the fact that, during its transformations, it has been able to move through the fields of pastry making, industrial design, and contemporary sculpture, without having to halt at any one stage or make a definitive choice.
