Our collaboration with the French painter Florence Laprat (1992, FR) takes its starting point from a book of photographs by Nobuyoshi Araki, Tokyo Lucky Hole, that is always present in her studio. This book serves as a sort of catalog of poses and gestures for the artist to use in her paintings. It is worn and dotted with paint stains, from its time spent on the floor or on the corner of a chair in the studio, collecting drips from the painter’s work and serving as an incidental sample of her color palette.
Florence made thirteen ink drawings on paper, inspired by the book’s photographs and in proportions corresponding to a double-page spread of the open book. Since she has already painted these figures a countless number of times, the gesture is spontaneous and familiar, as if instinctively recorded in the painter’s fingers.
Over these drawings created by the artist’s hand, we screen-printed an exact replica of the stains covering a double-page spread of the book.
The result is an limited-edition object that captures something of the intimacy of Florence’s studio and, in its own way, remains faithful to the joy and erotic subversion of Araki’s photographs.
About the artist:
Florence Laprat (1992, FR) in a French painter living and working in Paris.
Her work revolves around themes of the female body, intimacy and relationships in their broadest sense.
Her paintings often begin with ordinary situations, which she uses to explore the relationships between bodies and the forms of attachment that connect them.
Figures come together, touch, and sometimes merge, creating compositions in which the boundaries between individuals become increasingly ambiguous.
